Volunteers Meeting

Minutes of the Roswell Senior Net Volunteers Meeting

 March 26, 2009

Meeting was called to order by President Jerry Moore at 10:00 a.m..

Attendance:  Marilyn Blatt, Jan Briere, Bill Buttrick, Tony Coburn, Julie Cooper,  Jim Fenner, Julia Fogel, Maury Foreman, George Fuller, David Glowdoski, Ed Glynn, Oscar Groff, Kathy Hale, Don Hogan, Jerry Moore, Bob Nelson, Frank Padula, Brian Perry, Joan Pomeroy, David Printz, Emory Reese, Helen Reese, Jack Thompson and Ann Tilly.

Minutes:  A motion to approve the minutes as published on the web site was made by Kathy Hale and seconded by Emory Reese.  Motion carried.

President’s Report:   Brian Perry has been out with rotator cuff surgery and has brought in Larry Campbell to help with the Treasurer’s duties.  We have 51 students registered for spring session.  There are 4 already signed up for summer.

Exploring Vista pilot session will be run in summer.

All coordinator positions are filled except Room Readiness.  Instructors and coaches should leave room ready for next class.

Jerry commented on our 501(c)(3) status with the following information:  New regulations eliminate the advance ruling process, under which a section 501(c)(3) organization was required to file Form 8734 to establish that it had been a publicly supported charity during its first five tax years.  The new rules apply to organizations with advance rulings expiring on or after June 9, 2008. Roswell Senior Net’s expiration date was December 31, 2008.  Because of the ruling we are not required to respond to Notice CP 158 we received from IRS.  The most informative statement is the headline, "Do Not File Form 8734 at End of Advance Ruling Period.”

Curriculum Coordinator:  Ann Tilly reported she and Julia plan to keep Works on XP side.  They will alternate one quarter doing Works, next quarter introducing Office 2007 for 2-3 classes.  Julia says current Works course has value.  Ann will work up and add 2 Internet and E-mail classes and a Mail Merge class.  Jerry thinks very few students will have office 2007.  Julia Fogel reported she received 37 feed back forms with 2 on the wrong form.  There were very few suggestions for improvement.  Power Point scheduled for summer but we have no software for course.  Fundamental Class is full with 7 on wait list.  Emory Reese volunteered, with Helen Reese’s help, to teach a second Fundamentals Class if there are at least 6-7 students.  It would be on Monday night at 6:30.  Kathy Hale called those wait listed and left messages regarding opportunity

Digital Camera course is ready to go.

Technology/Webmaster:  Don Hogan reported there is one error in web site and it will be corrected shortly.

Manual Coordinator:  George Fuller reported manuals are being printed now and will be ready for classes.  He will check into adding additional Fundamentals manuals for second class to print order.

Lab Report/Disks and Badges: Bob Nelson reported all badges and disks through current enrollment are made and ready.  We had average of 4 students attending labs during winter quarter with a total of 34.  There were 5 volunteers assisting him.

Instructor/Coach Staffing Coordinator:  Jack Thompson reported coaches needed for Works and Word.  He encourages the instructors to recruit their own staff as is done by Emory for Photo Elements.  There were 4 attendees for Orientation and/or Coach/Instructor Refresher Meetings.  We should all make sure our volunteer hours are turned to Jessica Barker.  There is a form on the web site which can be filled out and e-mailed to Jessica.

Publicity:  Julie Cooper reported her committee’s brochures for the summer courses have been approved and printed and are ready to be distributed.  The classes are shown in a logical progression and revision date is included.  They are color coded by season and will be placed in libraries, subdivision offices, fitness centers and parks, rec centers and other similar outlets.

Kathy Hale gave update on participation in GPTV pledge drive.  We need 15-25 volunteers.  Rec Center bus approved for transportation with minimal fee.  Group was asked for their participation.  This will probably happen in June but exact date is not known.

Internet and Email:  Bill Buttrick-Internet 8 available.  He still has trouble with email from class computers.  When using Vista will use Windows Live instead of Outlook Express.  Internet 7 very good per Jerry Moore.

Quicken:  Howard Goldmacher not present.  5 students signed up.

Exploring Windows:  Vista pilot offered in summer with plans to alternate with XP.

Microsoft Word:  Frank Padula- Have received first 4 classes from Senior Net National for Offfice 2007, waiting for remaining 4.  Also found good manual available at half price.

Anti-Virus Strategies:  Ann Tilly--course is ready.

Buying/Selling on EBay:  Don Hogan--has revised the course.

Family Tree Maker:  Don Hogan--has completely revised 2009 edition.  It will be offered in summer.

Memoirs Workshop:  Tony Cobourn--no sign-ups at present.  Volunteers are welcome to sit in if class is held.

Photoshop Elements:  Emory Reese--3 students signed up,  will be teaching version 7,  volunteers interested in attending are asked to try to attend all classes.

Typing and Keyboarding:  Ann Tilly—class will be offered every other quarter.

Other business:  Manuals will be ready by Monday except for those added today.  They will be ready Thursday.  Emory would like to make remaining photos after meeting.

 Meeting adjourned at 11:30 a.m.

 Respectfully submitted,

 Helen Reese
