January 8, 2009 Meeting was called to order by Vice President Frank Padula. President Jerry Moore is still in hospital. Attendance: Jessica Barker, Marilyn Blatt, Jan Briere, Bill Buttrick, Tony Coburn, Julie Cooper, Diana Fallon, Jim Fenner, Julie Fogel, George Fuller, David Glowdoski, Ed Glynn, Oscar Groff, Kathy Hale, Bob Nelson, Frank Padula, David Printz, Emory Reese, Helen Reese John Szedon, and Ann Tilly. Minutes: The Executive Committee Meeting minutes and agenda with the Treasurer’s Report attached were distributed. Frank summarized issues surrounding IBM grants and our 501-C-3 status. President’s Report: Windows Class is cancelled. Memoirs Class cancelled back in October. Fundamentals class is full. Registration has picked up this week per Jessica Barker.
Curriculum Coordinator: Julie Fogel reported the pilot is finished for Digital Camera Course. Julie is working on Power Point Class and may be able to run pilot program in the spring. This course will be six weeks in length when presented. Very good overall reports received from fall courses. Feed back on interests in future courses and how students heard about our classes were discussed. Family Tree Maker will probably be back on summer schedule Technology/Webmaster: No report given. See Executive Committee Meeting Minutes. Technology Coordinator: George Fuller reported Vista has been installed on all machines. Only 4 (#’s 1, 3, 12, 13) are usable. Others are waiting for licenses. Three machines in alcove have Vista. Those with Vista have dual boot-up with 4 seconds to choose Vista. XP is default. Don Hogan has been authorized to buy 19” monitor to replace smallest one. Manual Coordinator: George reported all manuals are here for winter quarter. Lab Report/Disks and Badges: Bob Nelson reported all badges and disks through Monday’s enrollment are made and ready. Lab volunteers are needed. There is a sign-up sheet in back of room. Instructor/Coach Staffing Coordinator: No report Volunteer Issues: Publicity: Someone to head up this committee is still needed. Julie Cooper volunteered and a committee composed of Julie, Diana Fallon, Marilyn Blatt, Kathy Hale and Helen Reese was organized. Jessica Barker reminded committee she needs to see anything to be published. Emory Reese reported on past success using student biographies. Another suggestion was to submit pictures of current officers to local weekly newspapers. After meeting note: Julie Cooper will chair a Publicity Committee. Upgrade to latest software: Subcommittee headed by Jack Thompson will look into issues and plan how each class will go to the latest version. Ann Tilly asked if Office 2007 was being used in manual preparation. Julie Fogel will verify version. Frank reported on his difficulties installing Office 2007 on his personal computer. He has noticed Gwinnett Senior Net has a Word 2007 class and has attempted, without success, to contact someone to see if we could get a copy. David Printz asked why we did not use manuals currently available such as the ”For Dummies” series. We have been told by students in the past our manuals are better. Pilot class needed for Vista. Frank will follow up on date class will be presented. Anti-Virus Strategies: Ann Tilly reported this class is evolving. Buying/Selling on EBay: no report. Computer Fundamentals: Julie Fogel has made minor changes to manual. Class is full with waiting list. Computers for the Terrified: One session to be taught on March 11. Exploring Windows: Oscar Groff suggested we change course name to something more meaningful. Various names were suggested such as “Personalizing Windows for Your Use”, “Elementary Computer Set-up”, “Advanced Computer” Fundamentals and ”Computer Fundamentals II”. Frank asked for ideas to be sent to him. A Progression chart for students signing up for courses is currently in use. Julie and Jessica will look into any changes that might be needed. Internet and email: Bill Buttrick reported manual needs to be updated asked Julie Fogel for editing help. She agreed to help. Memoirs Workshop: Tony Coburn reported this course is cancelled for winter and will be offered twice a year in the spring and fall. Microsoft Word: Manual has been updated to include log-on instructions. Photoshop Elements: Emory Reese reported that coaches are in place for winter quarter. He will make some of remaining volunteer photos for posting in the classroom immediately after meeting. Quicken: No report - see Exec Minutes. Typing and Keyboarding: Ann Tilly will teach spring session. Other business: Frank gave course coordinators copy of Recreation and Parks current brochure publications for all courses. Coordinators should review and submit any changes to Jessica Barker by January 20 for publication in the summer brochure. Jessica Barker reminded us the Volunteers’ lunch will be March 4 from 12:00 to 2:00p.m. Please sign up. The meeting was adjourned at 11:45 a.m. In absence of Room Readiness volunteer, Julie Fogel has done some cleaning in the class room.
