Roswell SeniorNet Volunteer Meeting

June 12, 2007 7:00 pm

President Don Hogan opened the meeting promptly at 7:00 pm.

Attendees at this Volunteer meeting included: George Fuller, Julia Fogel, Beth Korn, Oscar Groff, Bob Nelson, John Szedon, Emory Reese and David Printz.

The first order of business was a vote to approve the March minutes of the Volunteer meeting. A motion to approve the minutes as submitted was made by Beth Korn and seconded by George Fuller. Acceptance of the minutes was unanimous.

Volunteers: There are six new volunteers for the Roswell Seniornet organization. They are:

Marilyn Blatt, Bill Butrick, Lois Dean, Barry Ferrill, Greg Harris and Frank Padua.

Their participation and community spirit were commended.

Treasurer’s report: Larry Campbell submitted the Treasurers Report at the Executive Committee meeting of June 5th  showing that the balance in our treasury stands at $17,835.55. The total amount includes $10,000 in a high interest CD with the balance in the organization’s check book. Roswell SeniorNet is in sound financial shape.

Summer ‘07 Registration: Registration for the summer session stands at 28 as compared to the sixty seven, (67), enrollees in the Spring session. We anticipate an increase in summer enrollment with what has traditionally become a last minute spurt of registrations.

Course Coordinator and SeniorNet open position opportunities:

Course coordinators are needed for the Ebay and Family Tree Maker courses. As of this writing,  Don Hogan and J.C. Campbell are considering the possibility of “Team Teaching” the Family Tree Maker course for Spring 2008.

Course Offerings:

Emory Reese indicates that The Photoshop Elements course will use PS Elements 5.0 not 4.0.

Additionally, Emory shared that Ancestry.com now offers military records as part of their services at an additional charge

Coordinator Reports:

Curriculum: Julia Fogel:

Julia reported that the feedback summaries have been released and are largely favorable with some comments related to some students being unable to clearly hear the instructor up front  when seated at the computers at the back of the room.

While there have been some potential student requests for a Vista course, a number of issues remain to be addressed relative to needed equipment upgrades, resolution of Vista bugs and fixes etc.  The Roswell SeniorNet tech team has been tasked to evaluate options relative to when an upgrade to Vista should be considered and the impact of equipment upgrade costs.

Julia is scheduling a “debugging” Memoir Workshop pilot program for the fall with the winter session being the first official course offering.

A digital camera course and PowerPoint course are still in development.  Additionally, a three session course on Google Search capabilities is in the planning phase for spring 2008.

Tech/Webmaster: Don Hogan

Web pages are up to date. A new printer has been installed in the first row of the classroom. Netscape 8.0 is installed on all classroom computers and all UPS power supplies have been equipped with new batteries courtesy of George Fuller. In addition, the current plan is to incorporate IE 7.0 as the browser on the Lab’s computers in December 2007.

Course Manuals: George Fuller

Summer Manuals are available and are in the file cabinets.

Lab report: John Szedon

John reports that the eight lab sessions held during the spring session had an average of 2.8 students per week with the highest attendance being six students and a grand total of twenty five attendees.  Attendance is typically high during the first four weeks and trickles down to one or none by the seventh and eighth lab sessions.

Summer Staffing: John Rittenburg

Staffing is complete.  John has submitted his resignation as course coordinator/ staffing and a replacement is being sought.  We thank John for his untiring efforts over the years that he has served in this position, to assure that course offerings were adequately staffed with volunteer coaches. John, you will be missed.

Disks and Badges: Bob Nelson

All materials required are at the ready and in the cabinets.

Publicity: Lois Dean

Lois has done an admirable job replacing Fred Wooten gaining placements of our course offerings in the local print media.

SeniorNet Officer Nominations for 2008

Bob Nelson accepted the leadership of the Nominating committee to propose a slate of officers who will assume the leadership of the Roswell SeniorNet beginning in January of 2008.  Elections will be held at the September 2007 meeting allowing a number of months for the effective transition of power to the newly elected team.

Having concluded all the reports and new business agenda items, Don Hogan accepted a motion from the floor to adjourn the meeting.  The motion was seconded and the meeting was adjourned at 8:20 pm.
