Executive Committee Meeting

Minutes of the Roswell Senior Net Executive Committee Meeting

January 5, 2009

Meeting Called to order by Don Hogan.  President, Jerry Moore is currently in hospital.  Don turned meeting over to Vice President Frank Padula.

Attendance:  Jessica Barker, Julie Fogel, George Fuller, Don Hogan, Bob Nelson, Brian Perry, Emory Reese, Helen Reese and Jack Thompson.

Minutes:  Approved as published on the Roswell Seniornet’s website.

Treasurer’s Report: Brian Perry.  We made money last quarter. In order to receive grants from IBM, we must register with IBM and report hours before end of December.  This was not done and we have lost grant opportunity for past year.  We need three IBM employees(ex) active in Senior Net to qualify for grants.  Brian is one, Dennis Kast will begin participating in Senior Net again and Tony Coburn is third.  Grants have been around $7500 a year.  Equipment needs not currently a problem so missing grant should not hurt.

IRS informs us 501-3C status ends and we must refile. Don will get with Brian to get information needed and Brian will refile.

Enrollment is low.  Jessica Barker said all sign-ups for Center are low.  They expect rush in next two weeks.

President’s Report: Don Hogan.  Windows Class cancelled today.  Memoirs Class cancelled back in October.  Fundamentals class is full.  Cancellation of class due to low enrollment is up to instructor.  The possibility of offering Picasso as a class was discussed.  We would need Course Coordinator.  It could be offered as an introduction to Photo Elements rather than competition to Photo Elements.  Emory said someone could teach Graphics portion of Elements instead of Picasso which would be synergistic to Elements.  No decision was reached.

Curriculum coordinator: Julie Fogel reported the pilot is finished for Digital Camera Course.  Jerry plans to teach it in spite of illness.

Julie is working on Power Point Class and may be able to run pilot program in the spring.  We need to think about target audience.  Frank Padula mentioned he uses Power Point quite a bit and volunteered to help with course material.

Very good overall reports from fall courses.  Feed back on interests in future courses and how students heard about our classes were discussed.

Don reported Family Tree Maker will probably be back on summer schedule.  He is revising manual to 2009 from 2005 and finding it difficult.

Technology/Webmaster: Don Hogan reported web site up to date.  George is doing 90% of Technical changes.  All machines will be ready for classes.  Word 2007 will be installed with Vista for summer quarter.

Manual Coordinator: George Fuller reported all manuals are here for winter quarter.  It was a seamless process with Printing Company and Coordinators.

Lab Report/Disks and Badges: Bob Nelson. All badges and disks are made and ready.

Instructor/Coach Staffing Coordinator, Jack Thompson Response to coaching and instructing needs has been poor.  He has learned Windows 7 will supersede VISTA and we are now two operating systems behind and need to be teaching current software.  Jack will contact each course coordinator and instructor to see what version of software they plan to teach.  Don suggested we check Senior Net National website to see if other organizations have updated manuals.  A committee composed of John Rittenberg, Jack Thompson, Frank Padula, Don Hogan & Gene Staten will meet to look into issues.

Volunteer Issues-no report except two volunteers who were supposed to be officers were no-shows.  They have been changed from active to inactive.

Room Readiness- Still no volunteer.

Publicity: Jessica Barker.  She and Emory worked together to get our ad in the Spring Parks and Rec Brochure.  It was “pretty much of a train-wreck” when published and will be fixed for next publication.  Information for summer classes due January 20.

Emory-stated publicity is major issue we need to address.  Don sent e-mails to all 55 volunteers re Thursday’s meeting.  Frank asked about note or announcement in Rambler Newsletter soliciting volunteers.  Frank also suggested e-mails to volunteers asking them to actively recruit others.  Julie said phone calls would be more effective.  Jessica announced volunteer lunch March 4.  We need to RSVP if planning to attend.  An announcement about need for volunteers could be made at that lunch.

Internet and email, Excel-no report

Quicken: Don Hogan has received 2008 Quicken Premier disk.  This will be given to Quicken students free.

Fundamental, MS Works, Computers for the Terrified  The Fundamentals manual has been updated by Julie to include log on screens..

Exploring Windows: Cancelled for winter quarter.

Other business: Don Hogan asked for authorization to buy flat panel monitor.  Motion made by Jack and seconded by Julie.  Motion carried.

2 machines to be surpluses.  Will be donated to North Fulton Charity.

Jessica reported the Computer alcove is working wonderfully.  She has fewer complaints from users.  Senior Net’s work really shows.  Painting of Senior Net room on a list of items to be done.

Frank complimented photographs on wall.  Emory plans to take more photos on Thursday if possible.

Consolidating the Executive meeting with the Volunteers meeting was suggested.  Don will look into whether by-laws need to be changed to allow this.  If okay, spring meeting will be down to one with short Executive meeting to follow Volunteers meeting.

The meeting was adjourned at 11:45 a.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Helen Reese
