Volunteer Profiles

A page dedicated to getting to know the volunteers.

David Printz - Introduction to Excel Course Manager/Instructor

A native of Atlanta, Dave attended city schools including Boy’s High. He went to Huntingdon College in Montgomery Ala.  After graduation he joined the Navy and was commissioned an Ensign after finishing OCS in Newport, RI. He then joined his ship, the USS Los Angeles CA135, at sea in the Pacific, his new home for the next 3 years.  After being released from active duty he settled in Long Beach, CA where he met his bride of now over 50 years.  In 1958 joined Aetna Life Ins. Co. as an Asst. Supervisor. He was transferred to Hartford, CT as a trainer.  He ended back in Atlanta in 1962 where he retired from Mass Mutual in 1996.

Dave started coaching and teaching Excel classes at the Benson Center in Sandy Springs about ten years ago.  After moving to Roswell in 2002 he became active in Sr. Net computer classes both teaching and coaching.

Jack Thompson - Instructor/Coach Coordinator, Coach

Jack was born in Atlanta, grew up in Wellesley, MA.  He returned to Atlanta to go to school at GA Tech. He made the greatest sale of his life: marrying Sara Grubbs in 1957. The next year they both graduated: Sara from Georgia Baptist School of Nursing (RN) and Jack from GA Tech (BSIE).  They are blessed with great kids: two sons, a daughter, and nine grandchildren (3 each).

After spending five years in Engineering, Jack entered the insurance industry in 1963 as an Agent with a major life insurance carrier.  After the initial struggle of getting into the business, the focus of his practice became business continuation and estate planning for the owners of small companies.  As the practice grew, Employee Benefit Planning for employers with 50 to 1,000 employees became a primary focus.  Benefit Concepts, Inc. came into being in 1972, later to become Benefit Concepts, LLC.  Jack’s eldest son Jack III continues the business today.

Small business owners necessarily wear many “hats”.  In order to compete in a rapidly changing environment, Jack had to become familiar with computers early on.  In 1980 there was very little computer help available to entrepreneurs. Classes available today at Roswell SeniorNet would have been a great help.  Seeing the opportunity to share some of his knowledge, he was easily recruited by John Rittenburg, another SeniorNet Volunteer.

Jack is an Elder and Stephen Minister at Roswell Presbyterian Church

Don Hogan - Volunteer Coordinator, FTM Course Manager/Instructor

I am a retired senior manager originally from Chicago, having moved to Atlanta in 2001 on assignment. Upon retiring, I decided to remain in the Atlanta area. Most of my professional career was spent in the business press industry where I held IT positions with divisions of American Broadcasting Company (ABC), The Walt Disney Company, Reed-Elsevier and Hitchcock Publishing Company. During a four year stint I was President and COO of a Chicago-area business magazine publishing company before returning to assume additional IT related positions with major corporations.

In 1995 I formed my own consulting company and serviced such diverse clients as McCormick Communications Group (Chicago); Reed Business Information (New York City); Cox Communications (Atlanta); and CMD Group (Atlanta). The assignment with CMD Group led to my last full-time position as Vice President of Information Technology before retiring in 2004.

After retiring I discovered opportunities at SeniorNet in Roswell, where I began as a  volunteer in the Friday Lab sessions which eventually led to further involvement as a coach and then instructor. I served as President of Roswell SeniorNet from 2006-2008 and currently hold the jobs of Volunteer Coordinator, Webmaster and IT helper.

On a personal level, my hobbies include hunting Civil War markers and waterfalls. Results of both activities can be seen on my WEB portal

Working with the Roswell SeniorNet volunteers and students has been very rewarding and I enthusiastically encourage others to get involved in volunteering, if not with Roswell SeniorNet then with some other worthwhile group.

“We don’t have to be ‘successful,’ only valuable. We don’t have to make money, only a difference, and particularly in the lives society counts least and puts last.”—William Sloan Coffin.

Congratulations David, Jack and Don on your contributions!
